Party Hosting Tips from Betty Crocker, 1967

  • Never serve the same dinner to the same people more than once. It takes only a minute or two to jot down a menu in a notebook or hostess diary and thus avoid a carbon copy of the party six months or a year hence.

  • Decide what you're going to wear and see that it's cleaned and pressed. Choose a simple costume – no billowing sleeves or skirts and nothing too tight. Fashion points can be a handicap in the kitchen.

  • Assemble ashtrays and, if necessary, coasters. There should be an ashtray, maybe two, on every table, chest and sideboard – in fact on every surface. Have a good supply of match folders too. You may, if you like, provide a variety of cigarettes.
